This morning starts early so we can get to 2200 meters on the Guacamayos mountains.
This trail is 14 kilometers all down hill and hides centuries of history. This very trail was the one that connected the highlands of the country with the amazon basin even before the Spanish arrive to what now is Ecuador. According to local legends, Rumiñahui, a general during the Inca Civil War, who after the death of Emperor Atahualpa, led the resistance against the Spanish in the northern part of the Inca Empire in 1533; hid the renowned treasure of Atahualpa or El Dorado in this region, and probably they went down to the amazon basin using this trail.
During this 14 kilometers we will descent about 2000 meters…this abrupt change of altitude will allow us to see different species of birds like Guacamayos, Oropendolas, Azulejas and more than 50 more species, Squirrels, Bears, Capuchino Monkeys, chichicos and more.
Even thought it’s all downhill in this trail the walk can be tiring so we will do several stops to snack, rest and refresh in natural Waterfalls along the trail.
Back at the Lodge a well deserved lunch will be waiting.
For this afternoon you can relax at the Lodge or book a massage to relax all those sore muscles.
For the last day we have a more relaxed but still active plan. Very close to the Lodge we will visit another shorter trail that takes us to a hidden cave and an amazing swimming hole.
Many of the caves in the area were the hiding places of the Kichwa communities when the Spanish arrive and started the conquer. Now they are considered sacred places for the Kichwas and we have the luck to discover this places with the real owners of the land.
