What to Expect

If you visit Ecuador, you can’t miss our full day rafting adventure to the to the Jatun Yacu River – Class III! This is one of the most amazing adventures you can do close to Quito. If you haven’t rafted before, or if you want an exciting and very friendly whitewater experience, you can never go wrong with this river! “Jatun Yacu” means “Big Water” in Kichwa, so be prepared for huge waves, and lots of fun!

First, we will have a 50 min road trip in order to reach our Put In, Cando; a Kichwa Community located in the Llanganates National Park. This destination filled with mystery and legend, boasts some of the most beautiful landscape and grand biodiversity in the country. According to local legends, Rumiñahui, a general during the Inca Civil War, who after the death of Emperor Atahualpa, led the resistance against the Spanish in the northern part of the Inca Empire in 1533; hid the renowned treasure of Atahualpa or El Dorado in this region. Even if the most exciting part of the trip is not being in the car, you will be able to appreciate a beautiful landscape during the road trip!

The adventure begins! After giving you all the proper and homologated rafting gear, and after receiving an orientation talk, we will be ready! The natural beauty you’ll be surrounded all day long and the adrenaline of this big water river will transform this trip in an unforgettable experience. While some parts of the river pump you full of energy, other parts are smooth and relaxing, allowing you to float down the river.

In the middle of our trip, we will stop in Shandia: a Kichwa community which is located in an island. Once we get there, we will play some fun games in the beautiful river beach. Also, you will be able to check and buy some amazing handicrafts and organic local chocolate. During this break, we will serve you a delicious lunch so you can recharge your energy for the rest of the activity! After this break, we will continue our trip for approx. 2 more hours. Fun is not over!

During the day, don’t forget to look back, the mountains behind the Jatun Yacu river will remind you why you are alive and why you decided to visit the jungle. We know that our IRF certified (https://www.internationalrafting.com/), enthusiastic and professional guides will make out of this trip a memorable experience.

This is a perfect activity for kids over 7 years old, if you have kids under this age, you should probably check our Class II rafting trip to the Anzu river: https://kayakecuador.net/tour/rafting-anzu-river-full-day/. Or if you want more adrenaline and stronger emotions, check our Class IV Jondachi & Hollín full day rafting expedition: https://kayakecuador.net/tour/rafting-jondachi-river-full-day/.

I have been rafting in the US for the past 5 years and am an experienced rafter. Last year we did a private trip on the Grand Canyon and we recognize experienced river people. I can say this company takes you to the big water, their guides help you to maximize the fun and are very experienced. This company is excellently organized and safety is their highest priority. They know how to make a crew feel safe and care that their passengers have an excellent experience. The riverside lunch stop was delightfully fun and the lunch was wonderfully prepared. I can’t say enough great things about this company and crew.
